Michigan Senate Race 2026: El-Sayed vs. Rogers Debate, Explained
By Savah News Desk
Oct 8, 2026 — Michigan's first U.S. Senate debate of the cycle pits Democrat Abdul El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers in a race that could decide which party controls the Senate after November.
El-Sayed, a progressive who served as Wayne County's public-health director, narrowly beat centrist Rep. Haley Stevens in an $81 million August primary. He now faces Rogers, a former Republican congressman, to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Recent polls show a dead heat: Fox News had El-Sayed up 50–49 among likely voters, while the RealClearPolling average puts him at 48.1% vs. 44.7%.
The debate that could decide it
Thursday night's debate is the first of two, and both candidates are squeezed between their base and the middle. El-Sayed needs to unite a fractured Democratic Party; Rogers needs to show independence from President Trump without losing Trump voters — especially after reversing position on the tariff war with Canada, Michigan's largest export partner.
"Here in Michigan we know that Canada is not our enemy. We need to end this trade war now," Rogers said in a new ad, cradling a Canadian beer — a striking turnaround for the former defender of the president's tariff strategy.
A progressive test case
El-Sayed — a Muslim son of Egyptian immigrants, born in Detroit — is campaigning on Medicare-for-All, higher taxes on billionaires and corporate PACs, and ending U.S. military aid to several Middle East allies. He has called Israel's actions in Gaza a genocide, a stance that has cost him support among some Jewish voters while galvanizing progressives and the Uncommitted movement that shaped the 2024 primary.
Polls show the gamble may be paying off at the margins: El-Sayed pulls about 8% of 2024 Trump voters and dominates among the quarter of Michigan that didn't vote before — a rare feat for a progressive, marveled Never-Trump pollster Sarah Longwell.
Democratic heavyweights rally around him
Kamala Harris campaigned with El-Sayed in Detroit on Sept 22. Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who narrowly beat Rogers in 2024, has appeared at his rallies arguing "fight versus flight." Barack Obama is scheduled to campaign with him on Oct 24. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez predicted his victory would "break open the entire political calculus in America."
Trump, meanwhile, called him a "terrible candidate" and a "radical extremist," writing: "I'm going to Michigan in about a week and a half." El-Sayed's reply made headlines:
"Donald, welcome to Michigan. I dare you to come."
Republicans are expected to outspend Democrats by more than $20 million in the final weeks, according to a media-buying source — but Michigan Democrats say the momentum is on their side as voters weigh affordability, tariffs and the war in Iran.
Why this race matters beyond Michigan
Senate control, the future of the progressive wing, and whether a Muslim progressive can win a 2024 Trump state are all on the line. Whatever the outcome, November's Michigan Senate race will shape US politics for years.
